Compton Board Trustee retains seat

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County Office of the Registrar and Recorder released its final tables for the June 7 primary election, with the Compton School Board race ending in the final votes.
Board Vice Chair Satra Zurita narrowly beat Mary Jackson Freeny to finish 1309 – 1305 and retain her seat.
Freeny is the mother of the former assistant mayor of Compton and a resident of Carson, which the seat covers.
The Compton Education Association represents teachers in the district who supported a slate of candidates who ran against the incumbents.
Denzell Perry was elected to the seat representing Administrative Area A after winning 60% of the vote.
Alma Pleasant will continue to represent administration area E after receiving 55% of the vote and her challenger Adrienne Thomas receiving 45%.
“It is with regret that Mary Jackson Freeny lost a close race against Satra Zurita, but that is not entirely surprising since some members of the California Teachers Association are in alliance with some members of the Compton Unified Board of Trustees and who are hostile towards teachers,” the CEA wrote on its social media account.
Union members believe that if more teachers are elected to the school board, they will have a better chance of negotiating pay increases in contract negotiations.
Zurita could not be reached for comment.
